Manoeuvres – What’s IN and What’s OUT?
Before the change candidates had to complete one of the following manoeuvres:
- Turn in the road exercise
- Left reverse exercise
- Parallel parking exercise
- Bay Parking exercise
The candidate will now be asked to do either of the following:
- Parallel parking exercise
- Bay Parking exercise – candidates can now be asked to perform this manoeuvre by driving in forwards, stop and secure the car then reverse out.
- Pull up and park on the right-hand side of the road and reverse back for a distance of 2 car lengths then rejoin the traffic when safe to do so.

Independent driving part of the test has been increased from 10 mins to 20 mins
The independent driving part of the new test has been increased by 10 minutes to make the experience more realistic for candidates. This element seems to have been well received by most candidates but it must be stressed that it’s important to listen closely to the instructions given to you by the examiner.

Introduction of Sat Nav testing
The sat nav element takes place during the independent driving phase of your practical test. Your examiner provides the sat nav and sets the route for you. Don’t worry if you’re not sure where the sat nav is telling you to go as you are allowed to ask the examiner to clarify directions. If you go the wrong way you should only be penalised if you make a fault while executing the turn/manoeuvre.
This element of the test is certainly proving to be a hot talking point for the simple reason that some pupils are finding using a sat nav confusing almost to the point of finding it ambiguous in nature, so how can this be countered? The best advice we can give you is to have plenty of practice prior to starting your intensive driving course or weekly lessons. You can practice when sitting in the passenger seat of a friend or family members car and then guiding them to the chosen destination by using the sat nav. You might find this tricky at first but after a bit of practice, you’ll soon get the hang of it.
NB. 1 in 5 practical driving tests will be conducted WITHOUT a sat nav. When this happens you will be asked to follow road/traffic signs instead.

Answer a vehicle safety question while the car is on the move
Not much change here other than the format of the questions. The examiner will still ask you 2 vehicle safety questions during your practical driving test. One question will be at the start of your test before you get into the car and the other when you’re on the move i.e. showing how to put the window down and back up.
